Hello there and welcome to Talent Management Truths. Today is a solo episode, a mini one, and I'm trying something a little different, a little off the cuff. I'd love to know what you think. So have a listen. Drop me a line, and be honest. Thanks.

1994. I am a grade eight French immersion teacher, and I hate it. I love the kids, but I hate the job itself. I'm a good teacher, but without going into all the gory details, it just wasn't for me. So after much angst and stress, I decide to leave the profession. And it feels like such a waste. The extra degree in education, the student teacher placements, the job applications, all those lesson plans, I'd agonized over a waste 1995.

I land a job as a corporate trainer and I love it. Critical thinking, managing complex schedules, lesson design, teaching. Beautiful 2012. My son is in grade two. He's having some issues learning. I know how to ask for help and work with the school to get support. Beautiful. 2013, I land a job as vice president of talent management for a large organization and get to build a gorgeous team and custom programs.

Beautiful. 2017, I leave my corporate job and start Green Apple Consulting, offering leadership development, talent management strategy, mentoring, executive coaching, and team coaching. I love it. Beautiful. 2020. My son is struggling with online learning in grade eight after Covid forced us all home. He's failing science.

I teach him an entire unit over two weekends and he scores 85% on the test. Beautiful. 2023. My son is about to apply to universities, but he doesn't know what he really wants to do or study, but husband and I sit down with him and explain that it's okay for him to follow his curiosity and pick from the buffet of learning in first year, and that it will become clearer as he explores his options.

We tell him that we see no need for him to marry a particular career dream right now because he'll probably shift and change careers over time. He chooses history and is thrilled. Beautiful. 2024. I'm coaching a client who is telling themselves that it was a waste of time to invest money and energy in their MBA only to find they really don't wanna be a leader and are thinking of leaving corporate.

I ask him what part of it might still be useful and where, oh, well, the critical thinking and strategy skills, of course. Uh, and he tapers off. He gets it. It's all useful. It's all a gift. Beautiful.
