Happy anniversary to me. Happy third anniversary to the show. Do do. Oh, hey, you're there. Welcome back to Talent Management Truths. I'm your host, Lisa Mitchell, and today really I'm, I'm doing a quick solo episode to celebrate. This show's third anniversary, October, 2021 was when it first launched, and I can't believe here we are, October, 2024, and it's three years old.
So today I'm doing a little bit of reflection and I'm winging it. So I'm gonna divide this episode into three parts. What have I learned? Was it worth it? And what wants to change? So what did I learn? Well, I decided back in, in 2016, I think it was, I'd been in business on my own for about two, three years and I'd seen all sorts of friends start podcasts and I thought, oh, that sounds interesting.
It was a way to expand my network, meet lots of people potentially help them find me, discover me, so that if they needed a, a coach or facilitator or a strategist down the road, they'd think of me. So it seemed like a great idea. So I like a good learning challenge, so I decided and wrote the project plan and found my producer and the software and figured it all out in about three months and launched.
What I've learned three years later is that having a clear purpose about why you're doing something helps drive consistency. Because let me tell you, this has been a consistent show. Every single Wednesday, every week we drop a new episode. I think there's maybe been two or three exceptions that whole time.
And you know, it takes, it takes a lot of energy. Knowing that my purpose was to give back to my community, expand my network, learn from others, and ideally find some prospective clients, it helped me kind of keep churning out batch after batch every month and hand that into my producer. Now, I will say another thing that I've learned is that it's hard to commit to a weekly endeavor that you fund yourself because it's not just the money, it's pretty pricey having a producer.
There's the software, there's my virtual assistance time. But there's, there's your time and your energy and there's this sort of pressure, especially when it comes to submit your, your monthly batch. I, I found that very stressful. I also learned that I love, still love, always will love talking to talent and HR leaders like you.
It's, it's just, I don't know. I love spending time with like-minded people, learning from them and hearing their stories and sharing them with you. Another thing that I've learned is that, you know, meeting with so many of you, over a hundred leaders that I've interviewed, there are still. Unrealistic and sometimes toxic expectations out there in, in the corporate world.
And, and this is around people's time and the time pressure that leaders feel. And, you know, it drives a ripple effect because I would feel it through people sometimes needing to be followed up with multiple times to finally book their recording time. Or multiple reschedules or even cancellations. Meeting with people for pre-call to explore if, if they wanted to come on the show and if I thought they'd be a fit.
And then they never booked, even with multiple follow ups. So it, it, it's tricky. I don't know if they got cold feet or they just got too busy, but it's, it's definitely been a bit of a challenge at times. But overall, I've learned that I still love learning and. Meeting all of these beautiful leaders that I've had the opportunity to, to interview has been a blessing and I'm grateful.
Okay, let's go on to the next section. Was it worth it doing a podcast week in, week out for three years? Has it been worth it? Yes, that's the bottom line. Ultimately, as I mentioned, my purpose has been to expand my Network, and I've done that by over a hundred people. And I'm in touch with many of them, and I am so grateful for that.
I've also recorded several solo episodes, kind of like this one, and each time it's been an opportunity for me to kind of put myself out there in a new way. For you to get to know me. It's helped me get clear around my message and around what's, what's true for me and, you know, if it helped others as well.
Great. Another point in terms of, you know, my evaluation around whether it was learning is, is did I actually get any new business out of it And I'm pleased to report. Yes, I did. That said, I'm still out of pocket. So I met some great people that hired me, that found me via the podcast, and it's been delightful working with them.
At the same time. I've poured a lot of money and energy into this because there's the production piece there. There was somebody who was helping me find new guests on LinkedIn. There's my VA's time and then software to run it. So it's been quite the investment. Again, I don't regret it.
It was totally worth it. And. You know, if you're thinking of doing an internal or external podcast, if you go out on your own, it is something to consider. It's, it's, it's, it's a bit of a slog to try to make your investment back. So it's gotta be a labor of love. Alright, third section. What wants to change when it comes to my podcast?
Well, I'll tell you. I've been doing a lot of thinking about this and I've realized that the main thing that needs to change is the cadence weekly isn't working for me anymore. and you know, I've decided that I'm gonna change it to where I am publishing about maybe two episodes a month and we're going to go on hiatus.
Just like other top podcasts that I personally listen to. We're gonna go on hiatus and take a break at December over the holidays and and for a good chunk of the summer anyways. So I reserve the right to change that back to weekly or, or over to monthly. As I feel fit for now though, with a bank of almost 150 episodes, I feel comfortable and confident that it's this cadence change Makes sense.
You know, I've also learned that being tied to someone else's schedule and their subscription model doesn't work for me. It, it never really has and it doesn't Now I have the most wonderful producer and I'm sad to, to part ways with her. And she's excellent at what she, she does. It's just that at this point we want different things and we need different things.
The other thing that needs to change is that you know, sort of as a continuance of what I was just talking about is the tone. At first I really thought, Hey, these are corporate people like I used to be for decades, and so I've gotta keep it pretty serious and very, very professional. And you may have noticed if you're a regular listener that recently in my solo episodes, I've really been changing up the format a little bit and being a little more playful and.
I love it. I'm loving this change and finding my own voice and allowing some of my humor and my quirkiness to be heard, and for you to know me in that way. So that is a change that I want to see more of personally, and that I'm gonna, I'm gonna, you know, be a little more playful in my approach to how I interview and how I do those solo episodes.
The other thing is that, you know, this podcast started as a labor of love. I mean, it really has been. You don't do something for three years every single week and, and make that kind of investment if it's not. Over time, it's become a bigger beast than I want or need. And, you know, it can feel like a real chore.
I can really procrastinate when it comes to batch days, when I have to submit four episodes at a time. And you know what? I, I think I mentioned this other a little bit earlier, but I need to do it on my terms because I want to once again get back to talent management truths, being that labor of love.
Thank you so much for listening. Happy anniversary to me and to us, and to talent management truths. Have a great day.
